Artist We Love: Manjunath Kamath

Enter the utterly unpredictable canvas of this exciting multi-media artist

Farah sees a glimpse of her life in this artist’s work. “Much like in my life, there are many stories happening all at once in a Manjunath Kamath painting. Yet each story is somehow linked to the others. I love his play of colours and the panoramic scenes he creates. And I absolutely adore the unexpectedness of his canvases. I see myself as a creative eccentric. I’m impulsive and I love the unexpected turns that my life has taken. My design too has an element of surprise hidden in it. All the elements don’t have to match, but they come together harmoniously in the final frame.”

Manjunath Kamath is a painter, sculptor and video artist with a penchant for creating fantastical, surreal landscapes through his art. Born in Mysore and educated in England, Kamath is a master at layering plotlines. The longer you stare at his canvas, the more it rewards you with delightful little details. His paintings are sometimes constructed like elaborate puzzles, with scenes merging into each other and characters who seem like they’ve been dropped into this realm from some alternate reality. But despite the fact that every frame is crowded with an almost chaotic number of colours and activities, there’s a superb sense of balance here. As Farah says, it all seems to come together at the end.
